Which terminal does American Airlines use at Heathrow?
American Airlines flies from Heathrow to cities including New York, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles from Terminal 3, alongside other Oneworld partners.
American Airlines check-in at Terminal 3
American Airlines check-in is in Terminal 3 departures. Flights to the US include extra security questions at check-in, so allow at least 3 hours before departure.
Getting to Terminal 3
US-bound passengers should have their ESTA or visa ready before arriving โ problems at check-in are the most common cause of missed flights.
Read our full Terminal 3 taxi guide for drop-off and parking details.
Arriving on a American Airlines flight
Arrivals from the US come into Terminal 3’s arrivals hall, usually in the morning. We track the flight and adjust for early arrivals, which are common on transatlantic routes. See Heathrow meet and greet.
When to leave for your American Airlines flight
For long-haul flights, plan to arrive at Terminal 3 about 3 hours before departure; for short-haul, about 2 hours. From central London that usually means leaving 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours before a long-haul flight at peak times, less at night.

Driving and parking at Heathrow vs a taxi
Driving yourself means paying for fuel, the terminal drop-off charge or airport parking, and allowing time for the long-stay shuttle bus. Short-stay car parks are convenient but priced by the hour, and long-stay parking needs booking in advance to get a reasonable rate. Inside London, older cars may also face ULEZ charges. With a pre-booked taxi there is one fixed price, no parking to organise and nothing to collect when you land โ your driver drops you at the departures door and, on the way back, meets you inside the terminal.
Children, extra stops and special assistance
Travelling with young children? Tell us their ages when booking so we can discuss suitable child seats. You can add extra stops โ to collect a relative or pick up a colleague on the way โ when you book. If you need help at the airport, Heathrow’s free special assistance service can be booked through your airline; our drivers will take you to the assistance point at your terminal and help with your bags.
Vehicles available
- Saloon car โ for one to three passengers with standard luggage; the most cost-effective choice.
- Estate car โ extra boot space for long-haul suitcases, pushchairs or golf bags.
- Executive car โ a premium saloon with a smartly dressed driver, ideal for business travel (see our executive car service).
- MPV โ up to six passengers with plenty of luggage.
- 8-seater minivan โ for larger families and groups (see Heathrow minibus hire).
