The route from Heathrow to Gatwick

Heathrow and Gatwick are about 45 miles apart by road. Your driver joins the M25 at junction 14 (from Terminals 4 and 5) or junction 15 (from Terminals 2 and 3) and heads clockwise past Staines, Leatherhead and Reigate to junction 7, then takes the M23 south to junction 9 for Gatwick’s North and South Terminals. Off-peak the drive takes around 55–65 minutes; on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons allow up to 90 minutes, as the M25 between junctions 10 and 7 is one of the busiest stretches in the country.

How much connection time do you need?

If you are connecting between the two airports on separate tickets, your bags will not be transferred for you. You will need to clear immigration, collect your luggage, drive to Gatwick and check in again. As a guide:

Arriving at Heathrow from Hand luggage only With checked bags
UK or Ireland 3 hours 30 minutes 4 hours
Europe 4 hours 4 hours 30 minutes
Long-haul 4 hours 30 minutes 5 hours or more

These include the drive, a traffic buffer and check-in at Gatwick. If your connection is tighter, call us on 020 3355 8186 before booking and we will give you an honest view.

Taxi vs coach vs train

The National Express coach between the two airports takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, runs to a timetable and leaves from the bus stations, not the terminal doors. By train you would travel into London and back out again, which usually takes around two hours with at least one change. A pre-booked taxi leaves the moment you are through arrivals, goes directly to your Gatwick terminal and is priced per vehicle, not per person.

Staying overnight between flights

If your onward flight leaves Gatwick the next day, we can take you from Heathrow to a hotel near Gatwick in the evening and on to the terminal in the morning. Just book both journeys, or ask us to arrange them together.

Gatwick to Heathrow

We run the same journey in reverse – see our Gatwick to Heathrow taxi page. Your driver meets you in the North or South Terminal arrivals hall and takes you to the right Heathrow terminal.
